Artist Statement

I photograph people in black and white, reduced to form, gesture and skin. After twenty-five years of making pictures for magazines and brands, my own work turned toward what that industry usually retouches away: the creases of a working hand, the folds of a body, a face half-hidden behind hair or fingers.

I wait for the moment a subject stops performing for the camera.

Without color or setting, there is only light on the body, and all the things we’re usually taught to hide.

Texas native, Matt Blum quickly established himself in the Dallas market and through his 25 years of photography experience, spread himself across the United States. Matt emerged doing fashion and glamour work and eventually traversed into commercial and editorial ventures for clients including Harper's Bazaar, Esquire, USA Today, Men's Health, and Playboy. A regular traveler, he has worked with agencies such as Ford, Wilhelmina, and NEXT across North America, Europe, and beyond.

Retaining relevance through the industry’s digital transition, he added film to his creative repertoire in recent years. Matt earned a 2013 FashionTV nomination for Photographer of the Year in recognition of his directorial talents and mastery of media.

He now resides in Barcelona, Spain and has authored his first book, “Failing Upward”.
